Ruinart

Ruinart is the oldest of the champagne houses, founded in 1729 and named after Dom Thierry Ruinart, a Benedictine monk. Travelling to Paris at the age of 23, he came to know of a new "wine with bubbles" growing in popularity among young aristocrats. Visiting his brother in Champagne, he passed on these observations and a conviction that making "wine with bubbles" from the grapes of his native region were the future.

Twenty years after Dom Ruinart's death, in 1729, his nephew Nicolas founded Maison Ruinart, the first ever champagne house. Nicolas' business grew explosively and was already a roaring success within the first six years. It is testament to the quality of Ruinart champagne that the house continues to this day.
